Several different models of the Millennium Falcon were used during the creation of the Star Wars trilogy, but the most iconic of them was the one created for the film The Empire Strikes Back. Millennium Falcon (MillenniumFalcon) is a light cargo ship created by the Corelian Engineering Corporation a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away in the Star Wars universe. It was won in a game of chance by Han Solo and became one of the main ships of the Rebel Alliance.

Story

Initially, the Millennium Falcon was an ordinary serial cargo starship of the YT-1300 type, created in Corelia (not in Karelia, although who knows) 60 years before the events of Episode IV A New Hope.

Due to their lightness, speed and versatility, ships of this type were very popular among smugglers, especially after the collapse of the Republic and the accession of the Galactic Empire.

Somewhere in the 55th year of its life, the ship was won in a game of chance by Lando Calrissian and, a little later, he lost in the same game to the most famous owner of the ship, Han Solo.

Han Solo, together with his assistant, the Wookiee Chewbacca, made many changes to the design of the ship and began to actively work on it, transporting contraband.

In the end, in Solo and Chewbacca, stopping on deserted Tatooine, they met customers in a bar: an old man, a boy and two droids.

Modifications

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian made many modifications to the Millennium Falcon. Calrissian created secret smuggling compartments that were then used by both him and Solo. Calrissian also significantly strengthened the ship's shields.

The Millennium Falcon was covered in duralloy armor on almost every part of the hull, which could withstand blaster hits even with downed shields. The Falcon also had new shield generators installed to withstand laser hits that would destroy a regular YT-1300.

Solo modified the ship so that almost all systems could be accessed from the inside, and only four systems required repair from the outside if they broke down.

The interior decoration of the Falcon left much to be desired - mechanical debris of “all stripes” was lying everywhere. The main "attraction" of the Falcon is the table with Dejarik, installed at the request of Chewbacca. The Falcon often had to fly away from the scene of the “incident” in a hurry. Thanks to its onboard computer, it could enter hyperspace in one minute, while most other ships required at least five. In addition, the upgraded engines were extremely powerful for a ship of such mass - allowing it to fly at 1.5 times the speed of light (1.62 billion km/h).

Exploitation

For 60 years, the Millennium Falcon was a cargo ship and a smuggling ship, but after meeting with Kenobi and Skywalker, the ship and its crew joined the Rebel Alliance.

After this, the ship was actively used by the rebels against the Empire and participated in all the key battles of the Original Star Wars trilogy, as well as in the events of Episode VII.

Creating a ship for the film

According to Star Wars creator George Lucas, the design of the Millennium Falcon was inspired by a hamburger, with the cockpit looking like an olive stuck to the side. The ship originally had a more elongated shape, but due to its resemblance to ships from the science fiction television series Space: 1999, Lucas was asked to change the design.

Model of the ship for the film “Star Wars. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was created in a hangar owned by Marcon Fabrications in Pembroke Dock in west Wales. After completion of construction, it weighed 25 tons and could only move with the help of pneumatics.

Especially for the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, director J. J. Abrams made a decision: to build the Millennium Falcon spaceship in great detail. The ship was recreated on a 1:1 scale, that is, life-size, and was also fully furnished inside.

Each Falcon model differs in functionality and design of some parts, the composition of the minifigures changes, and even the external panels are transformed. Now they have become more mobile, smooth and connect perfectly with each other.

This set contains 1351 pieces. The starship consists mainly of dark and light gray parts. The body uses black printed elements, grilles, plastic wires, and bright red and blue light lamps.

The construction set includes 7 minifigures. Lando Caprissian wears a bright yellow shirt with black prints on the front and back, and black trousers on his feet. A reversible gray-blue fabric cloak is thrown over the top. The minifigure has two facial expressions, dark skin, and an interesting hairstyle. In his hands are two accessories - a blaster and a mace. Please note that this is a new figure for this set.

The next character is Chewbacca. It has dark brown fur all over its body and a well detailed face. A belt with cartridges is slung over the shoulder. He holds a crossbow in his hand.

The third minifigure is Finn. He also has dark skin color and two facial expressions. The minifigure wears a beige shirt and a beige vest, which has many printed pockets and work accessories. There is a belt with a plaque on the waist and blue trousers on the legs. The minifigure has a brown bag slung over his shoulder and holds a gray blaster in his hand.

Boolio is an exclusive figure for this set and a new character. He has a green alien head with an interesting muzzle. There are yellow horns on the head and lower jaw. The figure is dressed in a beige suit with a printed belt and clasps.

Next are 3 droids: C-3PO, yellow with multi-colored printed wires on the torso and a helmet on the head, R2-O2, consisting of white, gray and blue elements and with printed details on the torso, and small D-O, white with green decorative details . By the way, the last two droids mentioned can be connected to each other.

The Millennium Falcon itself has not changed its appearance, but has become more advanced. This model now has no visible gaps on the outer panels. Some panels are combined with each other.

If we look at the ship in more detail, we note that there are round parts on the hull. For example, at the front they are used to activate the firing of spring rockets, which are located under the front elongated panels. On the back of the case, round parts serve more decorative functions and are made in the form of grilles. On one of the side panels there is a round antenna on a rotating installation. It can be rotated in any direction and even upward, while the position is fixed.

On the other side of the body is a capsule-shaped cockpit, which is attached to the main aircraft. The cabin has an elongated shape, the front part is transparent and made of flexible plastic. The front of the cockpit must be detached to accommodate minifigures inside. There's space for two minifigures, a lever and a printed control panel.

On the central part there is a rotating rocket launcher with weapons. If necessary, the hatch under the rocket launcher can be opened and a minifigure can be placed in it.

To view the interior of the Millennium Falcon, the front rectangular panel is lifted and then pulled out. It is this that blocks the opening of the remaining panels, because overlaps them from above. Now you can open the remaining 5 panels in a circle.

There's enough space inside to fit multiple minifigures into different play areas. The interior details are made in a single color scheme – beige. There are comfortable chairs in the work area, control panels, storage for weapons and accessories, a bedroom with beds, a kitchen with a stove and cutlery.

Turning the Falcon model over, we see several small chassis that give the car stability. There is also another rocket launcher with 4 guns.

Those who are already familiar with previous Millennium Falcon models will be able to compare them. The assembled starship measures almost 14cm high, 32cm wide and 44cm long. This is a great gift for children who are interested in space themes and collect Star Wars branded figurines. The constructor can be combined with other play sets in the series.

Origin and design

The ship originally had a more elongated appearance, but the similarity of this design to the Eagle transport workers space: 1999 prompted Lucas to change Falcons" design. The original model was modified, re-scaled, and used as Princess Leia's ship. Tantive IV. ModelMaker Joe Johnston had about four weeks to redesign falcons, and Lucas Johnston's only suggestion was to "think about a flying saucer." Johnston didn't want to produce a "basic flying saucer," so he created an offset cockpit, forward cargo jaws, and a rear engine slot. The design was simple enough to create four weeks in a window. The sound of the ship passing through hyperspace comes from two tracks of engine noise in the McDonnell Douglas DC-9, with one track slightly out of sync with the other to introduce a phasing effect. To achieve this, sound designer Ben Burt added the hum of cooling fans to the motion control rig at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

Models and kits

Visually, Millennium Falcon was represented by several models of both external and internal sets. For Star Wars, a partial exterior set was built and the set is dressed like Hangar 94 and the Death Star hangar. Besides the functional chassis, an additional support raised the structure and was disguised as a fuel line. The interior suite included a starboard annular corridor, gangway, cockpit access tunnel, gun turret ladder, caches, and forward position. The cabin was built as a separate set that could be rocked when the ship needed to be shaken. Several inconsistencies exist between the inner and outer dials, the cabin access tunnel angle being the most noticeable.

Effect models for Star Wars corresponds to the construction of the outer set. The basic model was 5 feet long and detailed with various kit parts. The ship was represented by a matte painting when Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) sees it for the first time, showing the full top surface. For the 1997 "Special Edition", a digital model replaces the effects model in several shots, and is used in a new shot falcons tearing away from hangar 94.

For The Empire Strikes Back, a new external set was built. In the spring of 1979, Marcon Fabrications, a heavy engineering firm that served the UK petrochemical and petroleum industries, was hired to build a movable full-scale external model capable of "moving as if it were about to take off." Built in secret under the project's code name Magic Roundabout The company leased a 1930s West Sunderland seaplane hangar at Pembroke Dock, West Wales. The model, which took three months to build, weighed over 25 long tons (25 t), measured 65 feet (20 m) in diameter and 20 feet (6.1 m) high, and used compressed air to guide the gasket up 1.5 inches (38mm) height hover movement around the dial. Along with the full-size layout in Sokol, a new miniature model was created for Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back to allow ILM to shoot more complex in-flight rolls and ropes that were not possible with the five-foot model. This model was able to be gimbaled, allowing ILM to simulate very complex maneuvers, such as the ship attempting to outrun Imperial Tie-Fighters during the asteroid field escape scene from the film. The new model, which measures approximately 32 inches in length, had a number of surface features that differ from the five-foot model, including updated chassis and different surface greeblies. As in Star Wars, many have been repositioned around many ships. The only significant design change was to add the chassis, where there was a disguised fuel line in Star Wars. This set includes a port side that gave the specified seven landing gears. The interior set has been slightly refurbished from A New Hope and features a sliding cabin door, a larger cargo hold, an additional corridor to the port, and room equipment. Two new interior sets were created that are not shown to connect to the rest of the set: the overhead hatch that Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams uses) to rescue Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and the compartment where Luke lies on his bunk.

5ft long (1.5m) effects from model Star Wars was modified to reflect the additional chassis, and several new models were built, including one roughly the size of a US quarter. For the 1997 Special Edition, a CGI model replaced the effects model for the approach and landing on Cloud City.

No new models or sets have been created for Return of the Jedi. Some of the full-scale ships were used to quickly change scenes from the film, in which several board characters Sokolov in a sandstorm on Tatooine. Falcon loses the dish sensor for the third time on Crait, after he was shot on a TIE fighter, but still manages to single-handedly take out most of the first-tier fighters on the planet while Luke distracts Kylo Ren. After the battle, surviving resistance personnel leave Crait on board Sokolov .

Kessel Run

In the original film, Solo boasts that Falcon did Kessel Run in "less than twelve parsecs". Since the parsec is a unit of distance and not time, various explanations have been provided. Modified by Han and Chewbacca to their liking. They made many changes to the ship's design, the main one being a military-grade hyperdrive that allows it to reach one and a half times the speed of light.

The YT-1300 model ship was seen during the Clone Wars. Subsequently, Lando Calrissian becomes the owner of a ship of the same class, having won it in sabacc.
