Scary pictures. History of Evil

Satan is the master of hell and the main opponent of God. He represents all dark forces. He controls a huge number of demons and other various evil spirits. His followers turn to him for help. Many are interested in what Satan really is like and whether it is possible to see him during his lifetime. Some sources agree that the Devil can change his images, reincarnating as different people, animals and creatures.

What does Satan look like?

Descriptions of the Devil can be found in the Bible. It says that Satan was originally an angel, distinguished by his beauty, wisdom and perfection. When he decided that he was worthy to be equal to God, he was expelled from heaven. Satan was first mentioned in the first pages of the Bible, when he, in the form of a serpent, tempted Eve. He also meets in the form of Leviathan - a huge sea creature capable of flying like a dragon. Numerous images and incarnations do not make it possible to determine and understand what kind of Satan is. The Devil appears in a new guise in the Apocalypse and there he appears as a red dragon with seven heads and ten horns.

It is impossible to say with certainty what color Satan is, since there are completely contradictory opinions, some say that he is black, while others point to red. There is even an opinion proposed by Satanists that the color of demons is not in humans. Thanks to modern technologies It is possible to determine the expected color. To do this, you should use hexadecimal codes. Scientists have long assigned each color a certain number, used, for example, in web design. If using a program, for example, Photoshop, you enter the devil's number - 666666, then you can get a specific color.

What does the sign of Satan look like?

People who know the power of various symbols claim that some satanic signs have enormous power and if used incorrectly, negative consequences can occur. To prevent this from happening, it is important to understand what this or that sign means:

Every year in the Mexican state of Veracruz there is an action that many consider shockingly disgusting, but it still attracts tourists. People from all over the world gather to watch the Black Mass for a variety of reasons.

Some are driven here by idle curiosity, others are looking for thrills, and there are also those who hope that participation in a devilish ritual will help them change something in their lives. But when journalists interview spectators after the mass, most admit that the only impressions of what is happening are shock and disgust.

This is quite natural, because they had to watch how chickens and goats were slaughtered in the most cruel way and how blood from torn arteries flowed like a river onto the heads of Satanists dancing in front of burning pentagrams.

(Total 20 photos)

1. Ritual of Worship: Participants in the Black Mass dance in front of a flaming pentagram before finally pawning their souls to Satan.

2. The sacrifices are accompanied by the terrible cries of suffering animals, whose throats are cut in the most painful way.

3. Witnesses claim that before the final killing, sacrificial animals have to endure real torture.

4. Rite of sacrifice: the blood of sacrificial chickens and goats is collected in a bronze vessel and then poured onto the participants of the black mass.

Tourist Randall Sullivan was literally shaking from the spectacle he had to witness: “They didn’t just sacrifice animals, but first tortured them. It seems that pain and suffering are a necessary part of these rituals, and there is no doubt some dark force at work in this.”

Shocked tourist Michelle Gomez described what she saw: “It was disgusting. What they do to defenseless animals makes me sick to my stomach, and I feel truly horrified when I think how far they are willing to go in their quest to see the devil.”

Michelle came to Veracruz from Austin, Texas, in the hope that attending the ceremony would allow her to improve her own psychic powers, which, she claims, have already helped her discover the souls of more than a hundred kidnapping victims.

“Because of what I had to see, I am now afraid for myself. Such rituals must be banned,” she said with tears in her eyes, standing next to the burning pentagram that Satanists use to summon Beelzebub.

“If they kill animals like this for the sake of ritual purification, then what other horrors can you expect from them?”

5. Chief shaman Enrique Verdon, whose head is decorated with a stuffed anteater, says: “Our black mass is rooted in the traditional culture of the Olmec Indians, and we are real experts in evoking the devil and his dark forces.”

6. Shocked tourists: Randall Sullivan (left) and Michelle Gomez (right). They are horrified by what they see.

7. The shaman pours the still warm blood of the sacrificial rooster onto the head of the devil worshiper.

The city of Catemaco on the Gulf Coast attracts many pilgrims looking for an unusual experience.

8. Enrique Verdon holds a black mass every year at the sanctuary on White Monkey Mountain, located east of the city. During an interview with MailOnline, the shaman said: “People come to our black mass when they want change.” The conversation took place in the shaman's official office, decorated with skeletal sculptures, pentagrams and exotic animal skins.

9. “Our marriage is falling apart at the seams, and we are trying to save it,” said Alejandro Montes before smearing sacrificial blood on his face. He and his wife came to Catemaco from Monterrey in the hope of obtaining happiness in marriage in exchange for souls given to Satan. Alejandro admitted: “This is our last chance - we have already tried everything.”

Last week, eight people took part in the ritual. There were much more spectators. These are foreign tourists who specifically came to Mexico for the Black Mass.

Randall Sullivan, a tourist from Portland, Oregon, learned about this ritual at seances and decided to take a look at it. Before the ceremony, he said: “I want to know how the shamans perform their miracles. I heard that only they can mix black and white magic. It's like confusing God and the Devil."

10. According to tradition, eight Satanic priests came from all over Mexico to hold a ceremony on the full moon.

11. Costumes of ceremony participants.

12. A tourist from Italy, Samuel Casella, said before the start of the ritual: “I think that today I will see something truly incredible.”

The devil's servant Juri Ra, adorned with a necklace of human finger bones, says: “We have powerful powers. Some of us are healers, others are destroyers. Today we are going to open a portal to another dimension so that those who want to talk to Satan can be heard."

13. The ceremony was opened by teenage girls in black lingerie. They walked along a candlelit path and carried eerie sacred offerings to the main altar. The altar was a font filled with burning coals, into which the shamans constantly threw handfuls of rotting grass.

14. Roselia Veli said: “All girls must be virgins and be pure spiritually and physically.” Roselia Veli is a black witch who uses strong tobacco and high-pitched screams in her exorcism sessions, for which she charges clients £200 an hour.

Those who came to beg Satan to grant their wishes were called forward and told to kneel before the shamans. The shamans tore off the heads of the sacrificial roosters and poured their blood onto the heads of the kneeling petitioners.

“Blood from a beating heart is the purest energy,” chief shaman Enrique Verdon told a crowd of shocked spectators. “These animals must die so that we can continue our work.”

“Their blood will be an offering to the dark forces,” he said, standing in the thick clouds of smoke rising from the fiery altar over which the headless birds were held until all the blood drained from them.

“We call upon Satan, the prince of the Earth, to appear before us.”

Authorities in the state of Veracruz have banned animal sacrifice, but in rural areas no one pays attention to this ban.

State police chief Arturo Bermudez Zaruta told MailOnline: “There is little we can do to stop this. If these people decide to put on a show where animals are brutally killed, they will do it anyway - no matter whether it is prohibited or not."

“This sacred blood will give us the spiritual strength and energy necessary for black magic,” said Enrique Verdon, finally cutting the throat of the goat squealing in pain. The blood was collected in a bronze vessel and passed on.

“Our guests must rub this blood into their skin to cleanse themselves.”

15. Having made sacrifices, the shamans lined up in front of the burning pentagram and sang hymns invoking the devil.

16. The ritual of taking an oath: eight shamans approached each of the worshipers, and they swore that they would give their soul to the devil.

17. A total of eight animals were sacrificed during the ritual.

After the sacrifice and chants, the shamans, along with new followers of the black mass, entered an underground cave decorated with inverted crosses, animal skeletons and a large statue of Satan.

Eight shamans again approached each of the worshipers and demanded that they repeat the oath that their soul now belonged to the devil.

18. Then all the shamans shouted: “Glory to Lucifer!” - they took an oath once again, prostrated themselves before the statue and sprinkled it with the remaining sacrificial blood.

19. “If you do not fulfill what you promised Satan, he will take everything from you,” said Juri Ra, sweeping the sacred blood from the statue onto the forehead of Alejandro Montes. “A terrible dark curse will fall on you.”

20. “I trembled with horror throughout the ceremony,” said Alejandro, who pledged his soul to the devil in front of the statue and swore an oath not to cheat on his wife again. “But now that it’s over, I have gained strength.” I believe that everything will get better now."

His wife, Gloria Espina, did not want to be interviewed.

Black masses dedicated to the devil began to be held here in 1970. They are held on the first Friday of March, and the popularity of this event has been constantly growing throughout its 45 years.

Coincidentally, today the Catholic... you know what. And this is mine 666 fast. So, as they say, God himself ordered me to write something about the Horned Prince... :-) At first I wanted to post one article, but it wasn’t particularly satanic (it will come later), then I thought of just posting various pictures of the Devil and Satan and came across this wonderful post.

The devil and his tricks. Ancient engravings of the 15th-17th centuries.

The devil and devils lay in wait for man at every turn, and many artists of those times could not ignore this topic. Priests especially suffered; there are many images and caricatures of them (apparently, there were reasons for this:).

St Anthony standing on the demon with a staff in both hands
Van Meckenem engraved St Antony and St Quirinus on the one plate, but the only known examples are from the plate cut vertically in two halves.

Quirinus is the patron saint of Neuss near Düsseldorf and Antony was a popular saint who in the same region was called upon in times of need. In 1474/5, Neuss was attacked by troops of Charles the Bold. This print might well have been produced in response to that event, to invoke the protection of these saints.

12.2 Satan in fine art: terrible and charming

All images of Satan correspond new biography , which interprets the Devil as a fallen, punished angel, a scenario that became firmly established after the 4th century. In such a context, it was only natural to portray the Devil as an inferior angel - so if angels had wings, then so did the Devil.

An example of this is the illustrations for the first two episodes in Old Testament which we looked at at the beginning of our story - namely, the story of Balaam and his donkey and the test of Job. In the first episode, the "satanic character" of the Angel of Yahweh, who, according to the Hebrew text, "comes as Satan" before Balaam, is "lost in translation": the Latin Vulgate simply reports: "...the Angel of the Lord stood in the way to hinder him [Balaam ],” saying to him, “I have gone out to hinder [you]” (LVB Num. 22:22, 32). King James Version: “The angel of the Lord stood in his way as an adversary (enemy)”, “I have come out to confront [you]” [ Ancient Hebrew.: “to be thy adversary”] (KJV Num. 22:22, 32 and notes).

Illustrations for this scene always show the angel in all his heavenly glory (see plate 1).

The illustrations in the Book of Job, on the other hand, strip Satan of all his heavenly regalia, even though the text suggests that Satan is “one of the entourage” of God: “And there came a day when the Sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord; Satan came among them [ Hebrew. “adversary”]” (KJV Job 1:6 and notes). We see, for example, in the famous illustration by William Blake that Satan is depicted as a muscular man with dark skin (see fig. 2a); in another version (see Fig. 2b) it is somewhat lighter, but has large wings, similar to the wings of a bat. We see a similar contrast in Gustave Doré’s illustrations of the scene with Balaam and the temptation of Jesus (see illustrations 3 and 4).

The only specific description of the appearance of the Devil in the Bible is presented in the “imaginary” vision of John the Evangelist in Revelation (12:3): there he is a giant red serpent (dragon). This may mean that it consists entirely of only a head and a tail - remember that in those days dragons were considered legless (see 6.2). But, according to John’s very symbolic vision, here the Devil has seven heads and ten horns somehow distributed between these heads.

Early illustrators of Revelation strove to follow closely. Albrecht Dürer's illustrations for the 1498 edition of Revelation are a late example of literal adherence to biblical texts (see plate 5). However, the Apocalypse of Saint-Sever (mid-11th century) contains a different depiction of Satan, based on another chapter of Revelation, namely the 9th, which talks about locusts. According to the biblical text, the king of the locusts is Avadon (see 6.2), but here he is clearly labeled SATAN, written on his shoulders. He looks like A tall man with dark wings, driving away locusts with a long staff (see Fig. 6).

The Devil was also associated with Leviathan, a huge sea monster that most likely had only one head. Hell was depicted as a similar monster, but located in the ground, so that only the head and a huge open mouth were visible on the surface.

The idea of Satan, chained in hell and feeding on the souls of the damned, can be seen in Italian frescoes, which may have inspired Dante's description of him. This idea was partly based on earlier "literary journeys" in underworld. But many motifs were probably borrowed from the artistic images of the last pages of the Apocalypse: the Devil, cast into the lake of fire, like the Beast, the False Prophet; Death, Hades and all who were not written in the Book of Life (Rev. 20:10-15).

When the Serpent of Eden began to be associated or even identified with Satan, another version of its image appeared in the form of a reptile, namely a snake with legs or, at least, capable of moving vertically; Previously, the Serpent was depicted as an ordinary snake that could only crawl on the ground or twine around the trunks and branches of trees. The biblical curse of the Serpent is clearly visible in the strange artistic evolution described above, which gave all snakes, including dragons, a pair or two pairs of legs (not to mention a dog's head, as well as bird wings and feathers). The tradition relating specifically to the Serpent of Eden suggested its depiction with human features, usually with a woman's head and often with a woman's torso and breasts (for example, see Fig. 9).

In the “lives of the saints,” as the chapters of the “Golden Legend” show, this biblical information was received further development. The devil and his demons can appear in any form they want - as frightening monsters (usually reptiles) or as ordinary people (including beautiful and seductive women). But when demons appear in their own form, they are usually characterized as "Ethiopians", that is, black Africans. In the legend of St. In Matthew we noted one particularly grotesque description of a demon inhabiting an idol, and in the legend of the Finding of the Cross, a description of Satan where he appears as a huge Ethiopian (see 6.2). There is a noticeable tendency to depict demons (especially the lower ones - tempting and punishing) as black and hairy humanoid creatures, often with clawed bird-like legs, with additional faces on the chest, abdomen, genitals, buttocks, knees and/or tail.

As an example of the variety of depictions of diabolical forces in the Middle Ages, let us consider the famous “Magnificent Book of Hours,” a remarkable manuscript originally created by the Limburg brothers in 1415 and completed in 1485 by Jean Colomb.

There is a magnificent illustration of the fall of the angels, still retaining their golden wings and clothed in sky blue. All of them, together with the first falling Lucifer, have crowns on their heads. Good angels diligently push the fallen, now evil angels (see Fig. 7).

We see Satan, still wearing a crown, but without wings, with huge horns and large ears, naked, with hairy thighs and large testicles, lying on a hot grate, heated by bellows that other demons fan. Satan swallows damned souls and then spits them out in streams of fire. He seems to be having a good time and his fever pain is not noticeable. He is not tied to the bars, and we get the impression that he can interrupt this fun at any time and go about other afterlife matters or create disasters on earth - any time he wants (see Fig. 8).

The Garden of Eden scene shows the Serpent coiled around a tree; he has a female torso and head (surprisingly similar to the torso and head of Eve) and the body of a snake with a pair of “crocodile legs” (see Fig. 9). Michael's battle with Satan the Dragon is depicted as a single combat; the dragon is not red, but golden, of very modest size (compared to Mikhail) and with a single head. The battle takes place over Mount Saint-Michel, located in northern France (see Fig. 10). Elsewhere in the book, a small scene of the Last Judgment is depicted, where the damned fall into the open mouth of hell (see Fig. 11). However, when Jean Colomb depicts the gates of hell, he only shows a fiery landscape (see plate 12). In this illustration (see Fig. 13) there are no demons, but only souls punished in purgatory and released from there. Finally, I must mention Colomb's miniature, which occupies the entire page and depicts the dead coming to the rescue (see plate 14); it was often mistaken for the image of the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse - Death (see 2.3, 6.2 and 10.3). But this is more of an illustration known history about the Grateful Dead (yes, the same story that gave the famous rock band its name). A version of this story is detailed in The Golden Legend ( G.L. 163). A man who prayed for the dead every time he walked through a cemetery was once persecuted by his enemies - and suddenly all the dead rose from their graves (each armed with their lifetime tools) and stood up as a strong and fearsome army against their pursuers.

Far from being demons of hell or minions of the Devil, these skeletal figures represent the souls of the dead undergoing expiatory purification. Such purification, as Jacob Voraginsky tells us in the corresponding chapter of the Golden Legend, takes place in a certain place, that is, in purgatory, or in specially designated places on earth.

The fallen angels are in charge of the punishments in purgatory, but, Jacob notes, sometimes good angels visit these suffering souls and strengthen them to endure suffering humbly and patiently.

The image of the Devil in the form of a goat is “coming into fashion” as a visual illustration of exactly how sorcerers worship Satan - Malefici And Maleficae.

The goat-like appearance of the Devil, often in combination with human face and torso, was strongly influenced by the classical image of the satyr - half-goat, half-man. The Devil also began to look like an incubus, that is, a demon who rapes women. Church Fathers, including St. Augustine, they believed that demons were capable of having sexual intercourse with people (see: Augustine. About the City of God, 15.23; NPNF1, vol. 2), which, of course, looked like some kind of mockery of the more ancient interpretation of the text of the Book of Genesis (6:1-4), where angels (“sons of God”) gave birth to titans from earthly women (see 2.1, 2.2, 5.4, 8.1).

However, for some time now it has become a common belief that fallen angels, like good angels, are “purely spiritual”, so that such connections are impossible. But, as St. explains. Thomas, a demon can make a woman pregnant using “artificial insemination.” To do this, he must first have sex with a man, appearing in the form of a succubus (which is achieved by reviving a female corpse or forming a female body for himself from the four elements), and then, transforming into an incubus, enter into a relationship with a woman and transfer to her the previously received sperm ( Sum. Theol. 1.51.3; answer to objection 6).

Common modern depictions of Satan dressed in a tuxedo (or, better yet, a tailcoat with a white tie), with small horns and a narrow, pointed tail, were undoubtedly influenced by the appearance of Mephistopheles in the operas of Berlioz, Boiteau and Gounod about Faust.

But now we are in the world of pure imagination, and it is time to turn to the modern world.

This text is an introductory fragment.

When someone is called a Satanist, most people take it as a standard curse word. Few people know that a Satanist is a person who belongs to a real religion. The Church of Satan was founded by the dark eccentric Anton Sandor LaVey. It has its own leadership structure, rituals, holy books and, unlike many equally odious sects, is officially recognized as a religion under US law. And that's not all that's interesting...

In fact, Satanists do not worship Satan. It would be correct to call them atheists. They believe that the Universe is completely indifferent to humanity. They idealize Satan as an example of pride and individualism. However, they do not believe in the existence of Satan in the flesh. In addition, they consider morality and ethics to be stupid inventions of mankind. Their idea is egocentrism and concern only for themselves, since, in their opinion, each person himself is the center of his own Universe, and there is no place for anything divine or generally supernatural in it. In their postulates they clearly state that they do not believe in supernatural beings. It’s a paradox, but thistle worshipers actually don’t believe in any devils.

Aleister Crowley - a swindler disguised as a Satanist?

Aleister Crowley is one of the most mysterious people of the turn of the twentieth century. He not only belonged to the Church of Satan, but was also a famous occultist, and also spoke of himself as a prophet. A decadent and romantic, Crowley actively promoted the restoration of pagan beliefs. He believed that the twentieth century would become an era of enlightenment for humanity, when people would learn to control their own destiny. He never talked about how he joined the Church of Satanists, but everyone around him knew that he practiced its rituals. Ultimately, Crowley was accused of participating in human sacrifices, most often of very young boys. Crowley's Satanism only added to his aura of mystery, and to this day no one can say with certainty who he is - a man with superpowers or a clever swindler who used Satanism for the sake of his fame?

The Black House on California Street in San Francisco was where Anton LaVey lived and where he held meetings for his fellow believers until 1972. All interested persons were allowed to attend these meetings. As eyewitnesses say, those entering the house were greeted at the very threshold by an altar on which lay a very fat naked woman. Only those who were truly not embarrassed by deviations from generally accepted morality risked going further. LaVey's house was indeed painted black, which is how it got its name. Here LaVey held parties, rituals and seminars. When his daughter Zina grew up, many people began to come to her satanic sermons. LaVey lived here for the rest of his life, and he died here in 1997. Until this point, the Black House remained the focus and symbol of Satanism.

Anton LaVey was the high priest of the Church of Satanism, and his high priestess was Diana Hall. They had a daughter, Zina. She was raised in the ideals of Satanism. Zina was only three years old when she was initiated into Satanism. The initiation of a three-year-old girl into Satanism caused a flurry of publications, mostly critical. Zina grew up under the constant attention of the press, her every step became public knowledge. As Burton Wolfe wrote in the preface to Anton LaVey's The Satanic Bible, the girl grew up "as if surrounded by a pack of wolves." Subsequently, Zina LaVey was the high priestess of the Church of Satan and its high priestess. However, for unknown reasons, since 1990 she has not communicated with her Satanist relatives.

"Satanic Panic" in the 1980s

In the early 1980s, a huge wave of fear and hatred of Satanists suddenly emerged in the United States, known as the “Satanic Panic.” The reason for its occurrence, in essence, was a mistake: when in the city of Manhattan Beach, California, a man was accused of raping the 2.5-year-old son of a local resident, in her speech before the court she stated that Satanists in black cloaks had already seduced hundreds of children in their town. The response to such a horrific statement was mass fear and hatred, accompanied by the persecution of members of the Church of Satan. True, over several months of activity by anti-Satanists, it turned out that the woman who made the first scandalous statement actually suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and in fact, none of them laid a finger on a single child. It was then, in the 1980s, in the wake of fear of Satanists, that rumors arose that if you listen to albums of famous heavy metal bands backwards, you can hear audio letters from the devil.

Marilyn Manson - Honorary Priest of the Church of Satanists

The shocking RK star was given the title of honorary priest by Satanists. True, in last years he prefers not to talk about it. In his youth, he dreamed of meeting LaVey and was sincerely interested in Satanism; It was at this time that he received his honorary priestly position. Later, however, Manson grew tired of the Satanic creed and never called himself a Satanist again. That, however, did not prevent him from remaining a fierce hater of the Christian Church at that time.

TO XXI century The Church of Satan has long since left the front pages of newspapers, becoming just one of California's curiosities. However, in 2011, Satanists again attracted the attention of the tabloids. Stanton LaVey, grandson of Anton LaVey, and his girlfriend Michelle Nicely, who lived in the San Joaquin Valley in California, were accused of indecent assault on a 19-year-old girl. They invited her to their house to smoke marijuana, after which they forbade her to leave. Stanton and Michelle tied the girl up, taping her mouth and wrapping her wrist. They then sexually assaulted the girl by forcing her to watch pornography. Then, at three o'clock in the morning, they kicked her out of the house. The next day, the girl contacted the police and the couple was arrested.

Joel Osteen is a well-known Baptist preacher in the United States, whose company earns millions of dollars. He is so famous and so charming that many consider him a Satanist, believing himself to be a god and instilling in his audience the idea that anyone can become a god. The reason for suspicion was the constant presence of his beautiful wife at Austin's performances, his wealth - and the preacher's statements that he did not believe in the reality of the existence of the devil (and this, as we remember, is one of the main postulates of Satanists). It turns out that it is enough to be the rich husband of a beautiful wife for you to be suspected of having relations with the devil. This is truly the devil's machinations!

Is Taylor Swift a Zeena LaVey clone?

Another conspiracy theory regarding the Church of Satan claims something completely incredible: actress and singer Taylor Swift is, in fact, a clone of her ex. high priestess Zeena LaVey! This theory has been around since 2011 - and it arose with good reason: a young Taylor Swift looks exactly like photos of the former High Priestess in the 1980s. According to rumors, Zina made a pact with the devil, who promised her eternal youth in different ways - this time, in the guise of a pop star. According to another version, the devil helped Zina clone herself in order to come into the world once again. One way or another, both Zina LaVey and Taylor Swift remain silent on this matter. Which in itself is suspicious, isn't it?

Panic is a dangerous thing and can cost the lives of many people. The Satanic Panic of the 1980s is a case in point. In 1991, already at its end, a married couple was arrested in Texas on charges of conducting cruel satanic rituals. A husband and wife ran a day care group for children. One day, one of the girls told a psychologist about the allegedly brutal sexual abuse she suffered while in the group. The psychologist, horrified, reported the girl’s words to the police, and they began an investigation, which, however, ended in nothing. Nevertheless, the parents continued to be loudly indignant - and soon other children, succumbing to the general hysteria, began to tell terrible stories about terrible rituals with sexual overtones that were performed in the group. As a result, both spouses received long prison sentences. It took more than 10 years for the authorities to realize that the children were simply making up their own horror stories. The unfortunate victims of the panic spent all this time in prison.

Zina Schreck, daughter of Anton LaVey, never told anyone who the father of her son Stanton was. Stanton himself, whose mother gave birth to her when she became pregnant at the age of 13, did not know this either. There were rumors that Stanton was the product of Zeena's incestuous relationship with her father, Anton LaVey. Lisa Carver, a musician and action artist, reported this in her memoir “Drugs Are Nice.” In response, Stanton and his then-girlfriend Zandora beat Carver when they met - which, however, did not add answers to the main question about paternity.

According to rumors, sexy actress Jayne Mansfield met Anton LaVey at a party during the San Francisco Film Festival. They were introduced by a journalist who belonged to the Church of Satan. Having become interested in the main Satanist, Jane went to visit him, where she was close to LaVey and was even ordained a priestess by him. True, LaVey revealed these details only after Mansfield’s death in a car accident in 1967. There were many rumors about the relationship between Mansfield and LaVey, including that Mansfield's death was the result of a curse placed on her by LaVey for her relationship with Sam Brody. However, there is no confirmation of these rumors, and many believe that this was just PR for LaVey, who was trying to arouse public interest in himself and the church.

By the late 1960s, LaVey and the Church of Satan had become popular in Hollywood. Only after all of America shook in the early 1970s from the brutal murders committed by Satanist Charles Manson did Hollywood acquaintances begin to shy away from LaVey in fear. However, the close friendship of many Hollywood stars with the founder of the Church of Satan gave rise to a lot of rumors that many celebrities owe their success to the devil, and also that the Church of Satan is a new incarnation of the omnipotent secret society the Illuminati, who, as you know, also enjoy the patronage of Satan himself. By the way, LaVey himself did not hesitate to use his Hollywood contacts to appear on screen. In particular, he played the devil in a violent scene in the famous film Rosemary's Baby. series that never saw the light of day. What is less known is that LaVey tried to act in a comedy series, which never saw the light of day. Perhaps, in fact, all he dreamed of was an acting career?..

In fact, the Church of Satanists is not at all such a misanthropic organization as they try to make it out to be. They do not perform blood rituals or make human sacrifices. Their principle is consistent atheism, based on the idea of scientific knowledge of the world, and the postulates are based on standard everyday rules designed to ensure the self-preservation of man in this world. By and large, Satanism is more of a philosophy than a religion, and their statements contain a lot of what famous popularizers of science say, such as Carl Sagan, Sam Harris or Richard Dawkins.

Before he settled down, Anton LaVey hosted "witch covens" with naked witches and rumored wild sex orgies. One of the witches was Susan Atkins, who later killed the pregnant Sharon Tate. According to rumors, Charles Manson, a musician whose commune “The Family” caused fear of Satanists by committing several brutal murders, also participated in them. And although members of the “Family” did not de facto belong to LaVey’s church, Manson proclaimed himself a Satanist - and this influenced the attitude of American society towards the Church of Satan. After the “Family” was arrested in 1969, LaVey, who was in no way involved in its atrocities, had to make a lot of efforts to prevent the shadow of the murderers from falling on him.
