How will the City Day celebrations take place in Moscow?

Residents and guests of the capital will enjoy a rich program of festive events dedicated to City Day in Moscow. The holiday, which traditionally takes several months to prepare for, is traditionally celebrated on a grand scale.

Several hundred art objects will decorate the capital these days. These include modern lighting structures created using the latest technologies, and decorations that were used about half a century ago and restored from old photographs.

The center of the holiday, Tverskaya Street, will traditionally become a pedestrian zone on September 7-8. You will also be able to take part in festive performances, take part in competitions and quests that will be held at various venues - there are many ways to have an interesting time in the capital.

On the section of Tverskaya Street from Stoleshnikov Lane to Manezhnaya Square, master classes will be held for lovers of sports and a healthy lifestyle.

Here you can see spectacular performances by participants in the show “Dancing” on TNT and the dance movement PRODANCES. Adults and children will be able to take part in dance master classes conducted by professional dancers and choreographers.

A little further, on a specially installed podium, you can learn the basics of yoga in hammocks, and also try yourself in hatha yoga. The classes are designed for beginners and can be attended by a couple or even with children.

Here you can also practice slacklining or, more simply put, tightrope walking. Anyone who wants to feel like a circus performer will be taught how to balance on a tightrope by real professionals. In addition to master classes, there will also be demonstration performances of tightrope walkers.

Even more entertainment awaits guests of the holiday on the site in front of the Moscow Hotel (the intersection of Okhotny Ryad and Mokhovaya streets with Tverskaya).

For the first time in the capital, on City Day, you will be able to see a show in a motorbike - a large mesh sphere, inside which professional motorcyclists will show their tricks at high speed.

An “air trapeze,” a metal crossbar attached to long cables, will be installed on the same site. Here, in the “Flying Show”, there will be performances by professional athletes who will also conduct master classes for guests of the holiday.

There will also be a “skateboard bowl” installed here, a special structure with upward curved edges that looks like an outdoor swimming pool. This facility, designed for performances by professional skateboarders, will also be available for free skating.

For jumping on BMX bicycles, mountain bikes and scooters, a special springboard 9 meters high was built. Here you can see demonstrations and competitions among amateurs and professionals. Shows and competitions are also planned at the Skate Park, a special structure designed for scooter jumping.

For the first time, at Moscow City Day, everyone will be able to become an expert in the “What? Where? When?". Four teams will take part in this game.

The presenter, who will be one of the famous experts of this club, will ask the players a question. After a minute of discussion, each team writes down the answer to the question on a special form, which is given to the facilitator.

For a correct answer, the team will receive one point. 12 questions will be asked. The team with the most correct answers will be the winner. To participate in this game you must first register.

The festival's theatrical program will be no less extensive. Thus, the famous street theater “Fura del Bausch” and the Xarxa Teatr from Spain will present their productions in Luzhniki.

The French street theater Trans Express, the U-Theatre from Taiwan, the choreographic theater Modern Table from South Korea, the trio OLE! will perform on Manezhnaya Square. (OLÉ!, Great Britain - Spain), the group "Dancing Muses" (Les Muses Tanguent) from France, musicians of the group "Furiosa" (Furiosa, Brazil - Germany), Moscow wind orchestra "Pakava It".

An extensive festive program awaits visitors to Moscow parks on City Day. In 2017, Moscow celebrates its 870th anniversary. The celebration program is full of interesting events. Spectacular military and musical marches, historical performances and reconstructions, exhibitions of equipment, screening of thematic films, and concerts of popular artists are planned. Also in honor of the holiday, more than 200 free excursions will be held on September 9 and 10. It is planned that more than four thousand people will visit them. Program Moscow City Day 2017 - September 10-11

City Day will be celebrated in the squares and streets of Moscow. Moscow will celebrate its 870th birthday. This means that a large number of bright, large-scale and free entertainment has been prepared for Muscovites and guests of the capital on City Day. The organizers promise that City Day 2017 in Moscow will be unprecedented - more than a thousand events will be held in the city. A whole system of festive decorations will create the mood for all Muscovites and visitors. More than 270 art objects will be installed at different points to decorate Moscow on City Day. These include modern lighting structures created using new technologies, and structures that were a decoration of the city 50-60 years ago, restored from old photographs. The celebration of City Day 2017 will be held under the motto “Moscow – the city of Russian cinema,” since 2017 is dedicated to Russian cinema, and the capital is the flagship of the domestic film industry.

  • FestivalMoscow cinema on Tverskaya street on City Day Moscow

The events of the Moscow Cinema festival will be held at 33 city venues as part of the Moscow Seasons. In particular, Tverskaya Street will turn into a film venue where scenes from everyone’s favorite domestic films will be reenacted - “Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession”, “The Pig Farmer and the Shepherd”, “War and Peace”, “Circus”, “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed”, “ I'm walking around Moscow", "Pokrovsky Gate", "Guest from the Future", "Night Watch", "Hipsters". All weekend long, Muscovites will be shown famous Soviet and Russian films and treated to the characters’ favorite dishes. A fascinating journey into the world of culinary delights of Slavic cuisine awaits visitors to the Slavic Meal culinary festival, which will be held on Revolution Square. Visitors will be offered culinary products and drinks prepared using historical recipes of Slavic cuisine. The festival includes an entertainment program (performances by creative and folk groups, pop singers, competitions and quizzes with prizes and gifts), as well as educational events.

At VDNKh there will be 20 thematic areas for children, where everyone can use construction sets, soft puzzles or cardboard to make a rocket, car or ship. Teenagers will be able to attend a guide school, where zoo workers will share their professional secrets and tell how to interest others with their stories about the animal world.

It will be possible to get to know your favorite city better! Free excursions around Moscow will allow you to look at parks, squares, gardens and museums with new eyes. By tradition, the citywide day of excursions is timed to coincide with the holiday. Over 200 free routes have been developed for Muscovites and guests of the city, including unique excursions from the city excursion bureau “Museum of Moscow”, local historians and architects. There are routes in the center of the capital and in all administrative districts, including Troitsky and Novomoskovsky. It is expected that about 15 thousand people will attend the excursions.


In Moscow, in honor of the City Day celebrations, 88 museums will be open free of charge on September 9 and 10. That is, entrance to all state museums on September 9 and 10 will be free for all categories of citizens. Among them are the gallery of the Museum of Moscow, Solyanka VPA, Vadim Sidur Museum, MMSI, State Museum of Gulag History, Manege, Multimedia Art Museum, Fashion Museum, Darwin Museum and others. Almost all museums have prepared special holiday programs for City Day. Thus, visitors to the Darwin Museum will see dinosaurs come to life and pet a polar bear using augmented reality technology. At the “Living Planet” exposition they will get acquainted with living tropical insects, and at the photo exhibition “Wild Underwater World” - with the inhabitants of the deep sea. Guests of the Multimedia Art Museum will attend the exhibition “Russian Space”, dedicated to the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight. Here they will show Soviet and Russian films about space travel (“Space Voyage”, “Aelita”, “Planet of Storms”) and talk about the lives of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Yuri Kondratyuk and Sergei Korolev. On an excursion to the Battle of Borodino museum, they will tell you how and when circular paintings, called “panorama,” arose, and why they are called “cinema of the 19th century.”

Museum of Military History
City Day celebrations on Lavrushinsky Lane will begin at noon. To the ringing of bells and the beat of drums, Moscow archers will come out to visitors in military uniform 1612. They will talk about the history of the Streltsy army, teach everyone how to shoot a bow and help them master leather, blacksmithing and pottery crafts. And the cavalrymen and grenadiers of 1812 will demonstrate drill techniques and take part in re-enactments of military and peaceful life. The holiday will end with the presentation of battle flags and the performance of the chamber choir “A posteriori”.

Moscow City Day in Gorky Park

On Moscow City Day 2017, there will be an extensive program of events in Gorky Park. On September 9, the central theme of the holiday will be cinema. Melodies from movies will play on the main stage, and the area near the fountain will turn into a film set. There will be a film school and a cartoon workshop for children. One of the central events will be the performance “Legends of the Wind” by the French street theater Remue Menage. Spectators can expect giant flying figures, jumpers, aerial acrobats and an opera singer on the four-meter-tall Moon. The Stanislavsky Electrotheater will show the electric cabaret “Life as a Film” - a performance-play combining old pop songs and fragments from modern films. The Cinema Poetry project will hold poetry readings with the participation of actors from the capital’s theaters and show film novels dedicated to the city. According to RBC, Moscow authorities plan to spend about 741.9 million rubles on celebrating City Day on September 9–10. In their publication, the journalists relied on data from the government procurement website. The capital's authorities have awarded 116 tenders for anniversary celebrations, and five more are currently being tendered.
