Etymology is the science of the origin of words. She sometimes gives answers to questions that cannot be reached using ordinary logic.

It would seem, how is the city of Charleston connected with Charlotte, and the dwarf with Lewis Carroll?

A strange combination at first glance, but still there is something that unites them. This name is Karl.

It was derived from the Old Norse karal, which meant “man” and spread throughout Europe and became very popular, including among warriors and rulers. One of them was Charlemagne, on whose behalf appeared in a number of Slavic languages the word “king”, followed by “queen”, “kingdom”, etc. However, the influence of the name Karl on the Russian language did not stop there. Visitors from Western Europe, as well as people of short stature. Hence “dwarf”, and, as a consequence, “dwarfism”, “dwarf”, words that have penetrated both biology (dwarf birch trees, rabbits, etc.) and astronomy (white dwarfs, dwarf planet). IN Soviet times, on behalf of Karl Marx and Lenin formed a new name: Karlen.

Despite the fact that the name “Karl” means “man,” as was mentioned earlier, female versions of it appeared and took root: Carla, Caroline, Carlota, Charlotte, Charlene.

Charlotte pie owes its name to the French name Charlotte.

2 states of America began to bear the name Carolina.

From the male and female versions of this name came the names of a huge number of cities, mountains, streets and other geographical objects and toponyms, current, historical, and possibly future. Karlovy Vary, Monte Carlo, Charlottenburg, Charlottetown, Karl-Marx-Stadt, Karlsruhe, Karlsberg, North Carolina - this is far from full list. Interesting fact: in South Carolina there is even a city of Charlestown, as we see, they are not only territorially, but also etymologically related. The name Karl is distantly related to the city of Korolev, because the name of this science city comes from the surname Korolev, which in turn is derived from the word “king”, which we have already talked about.

In the English version, the name Karl sounded like “Charles”, from which the name of the city of Charleston came, which later became the name of the dance. And the famous English mathematician and writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, by translating his name from English into Latin (Carolus Lodovicus), and then back into English (Carroll, Lewis) created his literary pseudonym, which can rightfully be considered derived from the name “Carl” .

Surnames were formed from the name Karl in different countries. In Sweden, the surname Karlsson, which means “son of Karl,” is one of the most common. It is not surprising that writer Astrid Lindgren chose this surname for her character, who became surprisingly popular in Russia, despite the fact that the spelling of his name varied from “Carlson” in the cartoon to “That same Karloson” in the movies.

Among the Karls, Charleses, and Charlies there were a lot famous personalities, and even more ordinary people who were lucky enough to bear this great name.

About the word Guy

Guy was originally only a diminutive form of the name Guido (Gaido, Guido). However, after the Gunpowder Plot against King James the First in 1605, when Guy Fawkes's attempt to bomb, assassinate the king and stage a coup failed miserably, the name Guy became a symbol of the conspiracy. The people did not forget the arrested and sentenced Guy, but immortalized him in the tradition of burning an effigy in his “honor” on November 5 of each year. Predictably, the word Guy began to be used to refer to the stuffed Fox itself, and soon to any other stuffed animal. And the one who is dressed like a scarecrow also began to be called that. And since many quite trustworthy guys dressed casually, gradually the word guy began to mean any young man, then, not necessarily young, then in general the address Guys could refer to any group of people, even girls.

Now the word Guy is used all the time. Often it is simply a synonym for the word man/human/person, which is known to be one of the most frequently used in the language. In addition, the word Guy in speech may not even always mean a person! It can be used to refer to animals (including when referring to them), plants, toys, and even inanimate objects. A gardener can say “Sorry, guys,” while trimming the branches of bushes, without thinking about Guy Fawkes, and, by and large, without even expecting an answer from these “guys.”

Now let’s think about it: after all, the name Karl began its journey from where the name Guy eventually came.

So, language revolves around human existence, and speaks, first of all, about itself, sees the world through the prism of its own consciousness. But let's leave philosophy for later. It’s better to think about what words, surnames and cities come from your name?

Teacher of the NOU OC Intensive Alexander (gave its name to the cities of Alexandrovsk, Alexandria, the mineral alexandrite) Nevzorov (from the personal name Nevzor)
