Features of English consonants

A consonant combination is a set of two or three consonant letters that, when pronounced, retain the original sound. Such sets occur either at the beginning or at the end of a word. For example, the word brave, in which both “b” and “r” are pronounced, is the initial combination. In the word bank “-nk” is the final combination.

Classification:

  1. The starting combinations are classified into sets with "l", "r", and "s". In "l" the combination ends with "l". An example would be the letters “bl” in the word blind. In the same way, the final sound in “r” is combined with “r” when “br” and “cr”, for example, in the words bridge, crane. On the contrary, in “s” it begins with s, “st” and “sn” - stap, snail.
  2. The final combinations are grouped into sets with "s", "l" and "n": -st, -sk, -ld, -nd, -nk. Examples: first, desk, gold, sand, sink.

Digraphs

Consonant digraphs refer to a set of consonants that form a single sound. Some digraphs appear both at the beginning and at the end of a word - “sh”, “ch” and “th”. There are also strict initial and final digraphs – “kn-” and “-ck”.

Examples of digraphs:

Ch- -ch
Kn- —ck
Ph- -sh
Sh- -ss
Th- -th
Wh- -tch
Wr-

English vowels

Each English vowel is pronounced in three ways:

  1. like a long sound;
  2. like a short sound;
  3. as a neutral vowel sound (schwa).

There are 5 vowels in the English alphabet, but sometimes y becomes a vowel and is pronounced like i, and w replaces u, for example in the digraph ow.

Rules for reading vowels

Short vowels, which are characterized by a "short" sound, occur when a word contains one vowel, either at the beginning of a word or between two consonants. For example, if, elk, hop, fan. The typical short vowel pattern is consonant+vowel+consonant (CGS).

Words are taught as families, which represent groups of words with a common pattern, such as the pattern “-ag” – bag, wag, tag or “-at” – cat, bat, hat.

vowels:

Sound Letter Examples
[æ] a rag, sag, ram, jam, gap, sap mat
[ɛ] e hen, pen, wet, bet, let
[ɪ] i pig, wig, dig, pin, win, tin, tin, bit
[ɒ] o hop, pop, top, hot, pot, lot
[ʌ] u bug, lug, tug, hut, but, cut

vowels:

Sound Writing Examples
A ai, ay, a+consonant+e name, mail, gray, ace
E e, ee, ea, y, ie ,ei, i+consonant+e he, deep, beast, dandy, thief, receive, elite
I i, i+gn, igh, y, i+ld, i+nd mine, sign, high, sky, wild, kind
O o+consonant +e, oa, ow, o+ll, ld tone, road, note, know, roll, bold
U ew, ue, u+consonant+e few, due, tune

The vowel sound in unstressed syllables is expressed with a shortened neutral sound ("schwa"), the phonemic symbol /ə/, especially if no syllabic consonants are used.

For example:

  • a in about, around, approve, above [ə bʌv];
  • e in accident, mother, taken, camera;
  • i in, family, lentil, officer pencil;
  • o in memory, common, freedom, purpose, London;
  • u in supply, industry, suggest, difficult, succeed, minimum;
  • and even y in sibyl;
  • schwa appears in function words: to, from, are.

Features of vowel sounds in English

Vowels are classified as monophthongs, diphthongs or triphthongs. A monophthong is when there is one vowel sound in a syllable, a diphthong is when there are two vowel sounds in a syllable.

Let's take a closer look:

  1. Monophthongs – pure and stable vowels, the acoustic characteristics (timbre) of which do not change during the time they are pronounced.
  2. - a sound formed by a combination of two adjacent vowels in one syllable. Technically, the tongue (or other parts of the vocal apparatus) moves when pronouncing a vowel sound - the first position is stronger than the second. In diphthong transcription, the first character represents the starting point of the body of the tongue, the second character represents the direction of movement. For example, you should be aware that in the letter combination /aj/, the body of the tongue is in the lower central position represented by the symbol /a/, and immediately begins to move up and forward to the position for /i/.
  3. Diphthongs are often formed when individual vowels work together in fast conversation. Usually (in the speaker’s speech) the body of the tongue does not have time to reach the /i/ position. Therefore, the diphthong often ends closer to /ɪ/ or even to /e/. In the diphthong /aw/, the body of the tongue moves from the low central position of /a/, then moves up and back to the position of /u/. Although there are also single diphthongs, which are heard as separate vowel sounds (phonemes).
  4. There are also triphthongs in English.(combinations of three adjacent vowels), including three sound types, for example, fire /fʌɪə/, flower /flaʊər/. But in any case, all diphthongs and triphthongs are formed from monophthongs.

Dear reader, if before studying English you became familiar with the names of Latin letters in chemistry or physics ( H 2 O - "ASH-Two-O", mv 2 /2 - "EM-VE Square in Half") or at least when playing chess ( e2-e4 - "E Two - E Four"), then the transcription of English letters may have become an unpleasant surprise for you.

Out of habit, such names of English letters as A - "hey", E - "and", I - "ay" And R - "a"(in the latter case the sound " R"although it is implied, it is very often not pronounced or pronounced very quietly). And the Latin letter W, which in Russian is traditionally called " double-ve", called in English " double", that is " double U", although its bottom edge in the printed image has two sharp, rather than rounded protrusions. This happened because in the old days U And V did not differ. There are also differences between American, British and Scottish English, between formal and colloquial English.

And you also need to not get confused with G - "ji", J - "jay" And H - "H", and explain to particularly gifted telephone interlocutors that "pi"- This P, not a Greek letter π (the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter ( ≈3,14 ), while herself π pronounced in English "share".

Impeccable automatic knowledge of the names of English letters is a very important skill that should not be neglected when learning English. Why is this necessary? Isn’t it better to practice your grammar or expand your vocabulary? But the pronunciation of letters is not theoretical phonetics divorced from life. The fact is that English abbreviations are almost always spelled out, and you may also be asked to spell out your name or some alphabetic code ( "Could you spell your name, please?" ).

And if you don’t know the names of the letters, you’ll have to blush and mumble something unintelligible. And some English abbreviations entered the Russian language with incorrect pronunciation, for example VIP should be pronounced like "wee-ay-pee", but has already taken root in the Russian language as "vip". When abbreviations contain several identical letters in a row, they are often pronounced using the words "double-" and triple- ("triple"), for example, when you need to name an Internet address, www pronounced "triple double".

What should you do if you need to pronounce some alphabetic code in a radio exchange in the air or at sea? You can't allow misunderstandings and hiccups in negotiations between pilots and air traffic controllers, or in negotiations between English-speaking military personnel and their non-English-speaking allies, so that the gunner does not mix up the code for the square "i" How "e".

To prevent ambiguity or misunderstanding, a code is used to represent letters in words, known as "NATO code"(phonetic alphabet of the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO). Surprisingly, even this code has shortcomings in certain situations, which is why in some cases the letter names in it had to be replaced.

And if you want the English alphabet with transcription to unobtrusively scroll through before your eyes every time you go to Yandex, then you can install a Yandex widget that will scroll through the letters of the alphabet forward, backward, or separately.

Hello my dear!

Today we have an interesting lesson ahead of us "English alphabet for children" , which will also benefit adults just starting to learn the language.

The article is devoted to how remember faster and more efficiently English alphabet with unfamiliar letters and sounds. And for this I collected in it exhaustive amount of materials:

  • for visual reference ( pictures, letters s and pronunciation),
  • for listening ( songs, audio),
  • to view ( video),
  • for downloading and printing ( cards, poster (word, pdf)),
  • and of course, to consolidate new things with the help of interesting games and tasks.

Let's study

Today I have prepared pictures for you that you can not only read and listen to online on my website, but also print out for yourself and teach in any free minute. First, let's look at the entire alphabet (click on the picture to enlarge), listen to all its letters, and then listen to its classic and long-loved song:

If you also listen to these 2 songs, you will understand that there is an American version of the pronunciation of the alphabet, the difference of which is only in the pronunciation of the last letter. It may be a small thing, but you need to know about it!

  • An ideal assistant in learning letters for a child aged 3-5 years will be Sound poster with Russian and English alphabet !
  • Also be sure to try A fascinating soft mosaic with English letters.
  • If your child loves to communicate with gadgets, be sure to purchase an online course from LinguaLeo « English for little ones» . After completing this exciting game course, your child will be able to recognize and correctly pronounce all the letters of the English alphabet, and will also learn to talk about his family and how he feels. Once upon a time, my daughter was simply begging to let her study more. In general, I recommend it!

You can watch my short overview of the course in the video (min. 3:15) .

And here is the alphabet with uppercase and lowercase letters. Try the following activity with your child:

  1. look at the picture next to the letter and say the word in Russian,
  2. find the corresponding English word in the Russian-English dictionary,
  3. check if it starts with a letter indicated in the alphabet,
  4. Write down the English letter and word in a notebook or notepad and draw a picture next to it.

An alphabet with English and Russian transcriptions of letters will help you pronounce them correctly.

And you can study these letters with words online - by watching and listening to their pronunciation.

And here is the promised word file for downloading and printing. For each letters have your own English word. On page A4 - 2 letters.

How to work with it:

  1. Print it out.
  2. Take colored pencils or markers and color the letters with your child (you can do this in the same way as the picture - add eyes or a mouth).
  3. Try to draw what it says next to each letter.
  4. During the process, be sure to tell your child about the drawn objects or animals or ask him questions about them.
  5. Work slowly with every letter: First say it several times with different intonations, pitch of voice, etc., then say the word written next to it. Then you can take 2 letters (previously cut into separate cards) and show them to the child - try to give him the opportunity to show the correct letter from the 2 you named.
  6. If your child is already 5 years old, you can master not only capital letters, but also capital letters. You need to explain to the baby that each letter has its own little brother, who is smaller in height and sometimes different from the older one (you can see them in the picture below). On the printed cards you can draw the younger brothers next to the older brothers - all the kids should like this!

I have another word file for you, where, unlike the previous one, colorful uppercase and lowercase letters and also English and Russian transcription for correct pronunciation. On sheet A4 - 2 letters. Download and enjoy it together with your child:

And this is a pdf poster with the English alphabet - for printing. It can be printed on A4 or A3 sizes. Colorful English letters are complemented by transcription (Russian and English), which will help any child and adult quickly remember English letters and their correct sounds.

Alphabet in colorful videos

Yes, the most effective and fastest way for a child to learn new English letters is to also watch a video. Now they are not at all difficult to find. Here are some fun ones:

And here is a whole series of cartoons, each of which is dedicated to a separate English letter. Video in Russian.

The last two videos are very good material for learning not only English letters, but also the sounds they make in some words.

Poems

Videos are always fascinating, but what about rhymes for quickly memorizing English letters? Have you tried it? Then go ahead! Children really like them. Click on the icon in the upper right corner for increase...

Games and tasks

I can offer you at least 10 more entertaining games and tasks to remember the letters of the English alphabet that are new to your child and their sequence ( about learning through games for children, also read). These games can be played as one-on-one with the child, and organize them for a group of children.

  • Learning with a ball

There can be many different variations of ball games for children. For example, you can throw a ball to each other and take turns saying the next letter. Or, for example, throw a ball against a wall and call it with each hit.

  • Draw a letter
  • Guessing cards

Try this option: you show your baby a picture of an apple - and he calls you “a” - apple. Or you show a kitten, and he calls you “c” - cat. Of course, this is more of a memory game and is suitable for more conscious children. But for repeating what you have learned, it is ideal like no other.

  • Alphabet train

The goal of this easy task game is to build a train from a pile of cards with English letters, each carriage of which must stand in its place. Only then will he go!

  • Stop song

The task here is to listen carefully to the alphabet song, and when the recording stops (the adult pauses at any point in the song), the children must repeat the last letter they heard and show the card with it.

  • Neighbours

From a pile of cards with letters turned upside down, the child chooses any one. The task is to remember the neighboring letter of the one that is in the child’s hands. In this case, you can call the previous letter or the next one. Any answer will be correct.

  • Guess it quickly

The goal of the game is to guess as quickly as possible what letter the adult is writing (who slowly and slowly writes a large English letter on a board or piece of paper in parts).

  • Add a dance to the song

One of my students was wildly restless. And in order to learn everything, we had to come up with a real dance with her, where for each letter we made a new movement, reminiscent of its shape. It’s amazing and incredibly strange, I tell you, but we managed to master it.

  • Connectors by points

This interesting and favorite activity for all children will help them quickly remember not only the letters of the English alphabet, but also their sequence. Here are 4 such pictures that you can download, print and use.

  • Letter - picture

Another exciting activity that will require children to know words (rather, it will be an association of a letter with a picture) beginning with certain letters of the alphabet. This requires preliminary preparation and work with pictures and words. I found these 6 printable pictures on the Preschool website (kindereducation.com). We connect the letters with the necessary pictures, and then color them for fun.

Don't try to do everything by force. From my experience working with children, I know that if you don’t interest them, but force them to remember something, there will be absolutely no effect. The baby will only hate the language, and then it will be even more difficult for you and him ( Where to start teaching your child English).

Also, don't try to memorize without the help of a song, video or photo. The child will not even begin to turn on his “memory” processes. These words should burn red in your mind when it comes to learning: HE SHOULD BE INTERESTED!

And lastly, he must at least somehow understand why this is necessary. Yes, it’s difficult to explain to a little person of 3-5 years old why he needs to learn any other sounds if everyone speaks the ones he already knows. So come up with some kind of fairy tale ( you can use), or watch a cartoon with him where individual words are spoken in a foreign language. This may arouse in him a desire to learn them himself.

And finally...

Of course, all children are different, and not all methods of work are suitable for everyone. Therefore, I can immediately advise looking for the right path to your baby. He will love English if you show it to him in the right light.

And remember, my dears, that I regularly share tips on how to help you and your children learn a language effectively. Subscribe to my blog newsletter and follow the news. It will be even more interesting soon.

In contact with

Consists of 26 letters, of which 6 are vowels and 20 are consonants.

How to quickly memorize the alphabet?

First of all, you need to learn. There are few of them, so they are easier to remember.

In English transcription, the colon sign indicates the longitude of the sound, i.e. it must be pronounced in a drawn-out manner.

Particular attention should be paid to the letter Yy. This letter is often mistaken for a consonant. In fact, it is very easy to remember if you associate it with the letter Ii. In words, these two letters are read the same.

It's easier to remember if you break them down into logical groups:

  1. Consonant letters that are similar in appearance to Russian ones and are pronounced the same as them:
Cc si
Kk kay
mm Em
Tt you
  1. Consonants that are similar to Russian, but are pronounced or written differently:
  1. Consonants that do not exist in Russian:
Ff ef
Gg ji
Hh HH
Jj Jay
Qq Cue
Rr [ɑː] A
Vv in and
Ww [‘dʌblju:] double
Zz zed

It is better to learn the English alphabet in blocks, writing and naming each letter in several lines. This is how three types of memory work at once: auditory, visual and motor.

Once you have done this, perform a series of exercises to consolidate the results.

Exercises:

  • Write the letters on a piece of paper from memory, saying each letter out loud. If you don’t remember the name or are at a loss as to which letter is next, you can look at the hint. When you have written a “difficult” letter, underline or circle it and continue further. After writing the entire English alphabet, write out all the underlined letters separately in one row. Repeat them. Write a few more rows of these letters randomly, calling them out loud. When you are sure that you have memorized, start the exercise over again.
  • Cut 26 small squares and write letters on them. Place face down on the table. Take each square in turn, saying the letter out loud. Check yourself using the table. Put those letters that you named incorrectly or forgot aside. After working with all the squares, take all the letters set aside and do the same exercise only with them. Repeat several times, each time putting aside only those that are not remembered.

Remember that any work on memorizing something should be structured as follows:

  • Learn and set aside.
  • Repeat after 15 minutes
  • Repeat in an hour
  • Repeat the next day
  • Repeat in a week.

In this case, the memorized material will be stored in memory forever!

Games for memorizing the English alphabet

If it is possible to involve 2-3 people, then you can diversify the study of the alphabet with games:

  • “Spell the word”

Any English text is accepted. Players take turns calling out the letters in order, starting with the first word in the text. The one who named incorrectly is eliminated from the game. The last one left in the game wins.

  • "What is missing?"

The presenter chooses from 26 cards with letters 5-10, depending on the age of the group. Players remember letters. After everyone has turned away, the presenter removes one or two letters. Players must guess which letters are missing.

  • "Who is faster?"

Each player is dealt the same number of cards; they need to be sorted in alphabetical order as quickly as possible.

  • “Find a match”

Participants in the game are given cards with capital letters. On the back of each card is a lowercase letter. 3 minutes are given. During this time, each player must remember and write down a lowercase letter. The one who writes the most letters wins.

  • “Continue”

One of the players begins to say the alphabet from the beginning, the leader stops at any letter. Players must pick up where they left off as quickly as possible.

  • “Remember Five”

The leader gives each player a letter face down. On command, players turn over the card. You need to write the next 5 letters of the alphabet as quickly as possible. The one who completed the task raises his hand.

Songs

To quickly memorize the alphabet, you can use. The melody for them can be found on the Internet.

Oh, well you see,

Now I know the ABC!

There is another version of this song, the last two lines of which go like this:

Now I know the ABC

Next time won’t you sing with me!

Currently, English textbooks give two options for pronunciation of the letter Rr: [ɑː] and [ɑːr]. In the second option, the second sound is an oversound, that is, it is not pronounced in its pure form, but muffled. Both options are correct.

In English transcription you can find several ways of writing the same sound. This is due to the fact that the rules for writing certain sounds are gradually changing, often towards simplification, for example:

Both sounds are pronounced [e] with the sound [e].

I learned the alphabet, what should I learn next?

After learning the English alphabet, it is advisable to learn the sounds that each letter can convey.

In English, many letters have multiple sounds, depending on the type of syllable and combination with other letters:

Aa [æ] her, a (long), e (with a sound I)
Bb [b] b
Cc [s][k] s,k
Dd [d] d
Ee [e] uh, and (long)
Ff f
Gg [g][s] g, s
Hh [h] X
II [i] [ə:] ay, i, e (similar sound)
Jj [j] y, j
Kk [k] To
Ll [l] l
mm [m] m
Nn [n] n
Oo [əu][ɔ:][ɔ] uh, oh (long), oh
Pp [p] P
Qq que
Rr [r] a (long), p (similar)
Ss [s] With
Tt [t] T
Uu [ə:][ʌ] yu (long), yo (similar), and
Vv [v] V
Ww [w] ue (there is no equivalent in Russian)
Xx ks
Yy [i] ah, and
Zz [z] h

Then you should move on to mastering the rules of reading. You need to start with the simplest, namely the first and second types of syllables. Having studied
