The legal profession is about questioning everything, disagreeing with nothing, and talking endlessly.

T. Jefferson

At all times and in all countries it has been popular and in demand. In recent decades, the profession in Russia has become prestigious and highly paid: a mid-level lawyer earns 2 times more than the average Russian specialist from other industries. Outstanding celebrity lawyers have exorbitant fees, but such professionals are few in number.

To become a really good lawyer, you need to choose the right university, study hard, and even after graduation, constantly improve in law. Laws and rules for their application are constantly changing, so you need to stay up to date with innovations.

Due to the popularity of the profession, law faculties were opened in almost all universities in the 90s - economic, pedagogical, technical and even agricultural. At first, the quality of teaching was low. But gradually educational process became of higher quality. So, with some effort from a student, he can become a good lawyer by graduating from the law faculty of a non-core university. Another thing is that employers choose lawyers either with extensive work experience or who have graduated from a serious state specialized university. A lawyer’s salary also depends on this.

Law schools in Moscow are considered the most prestigious universities. But it is precisely this advantage that is also a disadvantage during admission. In specialized legal institutes, universities, and academies there is traditionally a huge competition and a high passing score. But the universality of education allows you to find a job in any industry. While, for example, a lawyer who graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after. Gubkina, despite her high-quality education, will only be able to work in the oil and gas industry. It’s easier to enroll in non-state universities, it’s cheaper to study and the quality of education is last years is at a high level. The only negative is the lack of prestige of the diploma.

In addition to law schools in Russia, you can get an excellent education in foreign universities in International Relations and Law. But here you will need knowledge of English at the level of a language university.

Rating of the best law universities in Russia remains unchanged for many years. Personnel officers from prosperous Russian companies took part in compiling this rating, assigning points to graduates of various law schools. As a result the best universities recognized:

  • Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov;
  • Higher School of Economics HSE;
  • MGIMO;
  • St. Petersburg State University;
  • Tomsk State University them. V.V. Kuibysheva.

If you don’t understand what you’re reading even after the fifth time, it means it was written by a lawyer.

Among non-state universities accredited by the state, the leaders in legal education are:

  • Kazan Academy of Management "TISBI";
  • Krasnodar Institute of Economics, Law and Natural Sciences;
  • Moscow Financial and Legal Academy;
  • Taganrog Institute of Management and Economics.

In recent years, the Russian economy has been successfully transitioning from the raw materials sector to the production of intellectual products, so there is an urgent need for specialists in the field legal support protection of information, intellectual property rights and legal support for innovative entrepreneurship.

The legal profession is not only prestigious, but also requires a high intellectual level. After all, in addition to knowledge of legislation, knowledge of rhetoric, psychology, and logic is necessary. A presentable appearance, the ability to analyze and persuade are very important.

Thanks to legal education, many of the country's top leaders were able to make a brilliant career: Vladimir Lenin (Ulyanov), Dmitry Medvedev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Ruslan Khasbulatov and many others. In foreign countries, the same trend: most US presidents were lawyers by training - John Adams, Thomas Jefferson Andrew Jackson, Lyndon Johnson, John Tyler, Woodrow Wilson, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, etc. In Cuba - Fidel Castro, in Great Britain - the Prime Minister -Minister Tony Blair and his predecessors. The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is Dr. legal sciences Xi Jinping. The German chancellor before Angela Merkel was the lawyer Gerhard Schröder. The presidents of the Fifth Republic of France, François Mitterrand and Nicolas Sarkozy, were also lawyers.

Every lawyer has the potential to become a head of state. Perhaps it will be you. Go for it!

Higher legal education

Moscow law universities are considered one of the most prestigious higher educational institutions. A diploma from a prestigious law school will ensure good employment and salary. But along with these advantages, legal education also has a number of disadvantages.

Legal institutes, universities, and academies are overcrowded and have a huge competition for recruitment. In addition, do not forget about “our own”, who will take the lion’s share budget places. You only have to count on paid training, and its prices are constantly rising. Non-state universities are saving the situation. Getting there is much easier, and the quality of education is on par with the best government institutions. The only disadvantage of private law universities is the prestige of the diploma.

It is worth considering foreign educational institutions to study the specialty of jurisprudence. An MBA will provide you with knowledge and a diploma that will be valued not only in Russia, but throughout the world. Foreign law schools provide better education in international relations and law. Only requirement for English language at a European university will be at the level of a foreign language in Moscow.

What is better is the quality of education or an elite crust, one can argue endlessly. A diploma is a chance to find a job, and a quality education is a guarantee of career advancement. It’s easier to get a job with a good diploma, but building a career without knowledge is unlikely.

State law universities have another very important advantage: a military department. The army will take away a year of your life, during which your knowledge may be lost or become irrelevant. This issue is acute for young men who want to connect their future with jurisprudence.

When applying, many people pay attention to the rankings of law schools. But the rankings are based on a large number of indicators that are not always important for students, for example: the number of foreign students is taken into account. It makes no difference to a student whether a student from Kursk or Warsaw is sitting at his desk. But such statistics can move a university higher on the ranking list. But are employers always familiar with the various ratings? Much more important is the fact of having a well-known diploma educational institution. Few people know what place it occupies in the QS ranking. It will be much more important for you who will teach you and under what conditions you will have to accumulate knowledge.

To the applicant, before entering law school, it’s worth seriously thinking: does he really want to work in this field? There is a lot of competition not only for admission to college, but also for employment. The solution may be to enroll in a law school at a specialized university. A good example can serve as the Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after. THEM. Gubkina. This state university trains specialists in the oil and gas sector, which, in addition to engineers, needs lawyers and economists. Kerosene supplies trained personnel. After receiving an education at this university, you will be able to find a job in the oil and gas or chemical sector. But you won’t be able to get a job in another industry without work experience.

Studying to become a lawyer with knowledge of foreign languages

In our age of globalization and active intercultural communication, it is important not only to be able to communicate in a foreign language, but also to speak it at the level required in a professional environment. Sometimes a successful career requires knowledge of several foreign languages. Previously, it was possible to obtain the language knowledge and skills needed by a professional at universities within the framework of international and foreign economic specializations. With the introduction of a two-stage system of higher education and the reduction of the period of study at the first stage of undergraduate education to four years, maintaining high standards of training international specialists has become much more difficult. Using the example of the “Jurisprudence” training field, we analyzed how the scope of teaching has changed foreign languages for bachelors at Moscow institutes.

Many universities have completely abandoned the international legal profile of the bachelor's degree in jurisprudence. Among who have retained this training profile, which involves in-depth study of two foreign languages (6–8 hours per week) in the curriculum: VAVT, IMTP, MNEPU, RosNOU. In other institutes, the international profile is supported by in-depth study of the main foreign language (most often English) over four years of study, and the study of a second foreign and Latin language offered as electives. Even more often, instead of in-depth study of a foreign language, training is introduced according to a standard program (2 hours per week), while in-depth study is offered as part of additional and elective programs.

It can be noted that universities that prepare bachelors of law in general, but, having departments and institutes of international law, retain the international specifics of legal education and, in particular, high level teaching foreign languages. Moscow universities such as MGIMO, Moscow State Law Academy, RUDN University, and Higher School of Economics provide future lawyers with in-depth specialized training for working in a foreign-language professional environment.

A professional foreign language remains in the curricula of some universities only as part of a variable (optional) part, electives, or is offered as part of additional language programs in legal translation, preparation of legal documentation in English, infocommunication resources in legal translation, business English, professional speech culture , regional studies, study of legal terminology, etc.

The decline in the level of language knowledge of future international lawyers has apparently led to the fact that in rare universities learning programs contain disciplines taught in foreign languages. True, senior students still receive lectures from foreign teachers, internships and short-term training programs in well-known foreign law universities, internships in the country of the language they are learning, and participation in international competitions and conferences in the field of international law.

We did not find a single joint or international bachelor's degree program in law in Moscow institutions. But education at the second stage, in the master's degree, involves a large selection of internationally oriented programs both from Russian universities and in partnership with foreign colleagues. During master's studies in international law, the study of foreign languages continues, professional language skills are further improved - the ability to freely navigate legal texts, make messages and conduct conversations on professional topics, and draw up legal documents.

The International Law Institute is a structural link of the University named after O.E. Kutafina (MSAL) (hereinafter referred to as the University), which has its own history.

In 2000, as an experiment, in-depth study of private international law and two foreign languages was introduced in one of the University’s study groups.

Due to the success of the experiment, the Department of International Economic and Financial Law was created in 2002 for full-time education.

On April 1, 2005, the Department was transformed into an independent structural unit of the University - the Institute of Private International Law, which, in connection with the opening of an international legal training profile, was renamed the International Law Institute on January 31, 2011.

The International Law Institute provides training for full-time bachelors in the field of Law. Duration of training is 4 years.

The peculiarity of the curriculum in the international legal profile is that already from the first year, students are taught international legal disciplines, which are preparatory to the disciplines of the profile in senior years - “Introduction to the profession of international lawyer”, “Judicial systems of the Russian Federation and foreign countries" etc.

In addition, students of the International Law Institute have the opportunity to choose subjects for in-depth study:

In the department of international (public) law - “Law of International Treaties”, “International Maritime Law”, “Customs Law”, “International Organizations and Conferences”, “International Criminal Law”, “Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette”, etc.;

In the department of private international law - “Cross-border commercial contracts”, “Industrial property in private international law”, “Copyright in private international law”, “Inheritance in private international law”, “Cross-border transportation”, “Legal regulation of foreign investments” and etc.;

In the Department of Integration and European Law - “Migration Law of the European Union and Mechanisms for the Protection of Human Rights in Europe”, “Procedural Law of the European Union”, “Trade Law of the European Union”, etc.

Studying at the International Law Institute is advisable for those who see themselves as a future lawyer working in government bodies of external relations, international organizations, enterprises with foreign participation, enterprises engaged in foreign economic activity both in Russia and abroad.

It is worth emphasizing that at the University named after O.E. Kutafin (MSLA), the choice of an international legal profile for full-time study is possible only at the International Law Institute.

It should be noted that in addition to the profile disciplines, from the very beginning of their studies, students can choose one or more additional educational programs for in-depth study of a foreign language: English, French, German, Spanish - with additional qualifications - “Translator in the field of professional communication "

The learning process at the International Law Institute is practice-oriented. Students undergo internships in courts, organizations and institutions whose activities correlate with their training profile: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, the International Commercial Arbitration Court, etc.

In addition to participating in the process provided for by the curriculum, students of the International Law Institute have many other opportunities for professional development, for example, the possibility of internships in the countries of the foreign language they are studying - France, Germany, England, Spain, Holland, Switzerland, etc.

Students of the International Law Institute take part in Russian and international scientific and practical events - competitions, round tables, business games (for example, in the Philip Jessup competition, an intellectual competition to build the best model of the United Nations and the European Union, etc.). Students participate in research work - make presentations at conferences and other events held by the Student Scientific Society of the O.E. University. Kutafina (MSAL).

After successful development educational program Bachelor's degree graduates can continue their studies in the program at the next level of education - the master's program.
