Origins of the Ekaterinburg Institute physical culture(branch) UralGUFK goes back to one of the oldest educational physical education institutions in Russia - the Yekaterinburg College of Physical Education, which opened on December 26, 1929. For more than 85 years, the college has been training personnel for the sports industry, among its graduates are Honored Masters of Sports, Honored Trainers of the USSR, Honored Workers of Physical Culture and Sports, International Masters of Sports, champions and medalists of the Olympic Games. In 2000, a representative office of the Ural State Academy of Physical Culture was opened on the basis of the college. A scientific research laboratory has been created, in which practical classes are conducted in the disciplines of the professional cycle and in which the leading athletes of the national teams of the city, region and country are diagnosed.

Ekaterinburg Institute of Physical Culture (branch) of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Ural state university Physical Culture" is one of the youngest and one of the few universities training physical education specialists in the Sverdlovsk region.

The origins of the branch lie in the bowels of the Yekaterinburg College of Physical Education - one of the oldest educational physical education institutions in the city of Yekaterinburg. At the end of the 90s of the 20th century, an urgent need arose to create a branch of the university on the basis of the college. On the initiative of the director of the college of physical education, Yuri Ivanovich Sazonov and the pedagogical council of the educational institution with the support of the rector of the Ural State Academy of Physical Culture, Leonid Mikhailovich Kulikov, a representative office of Ural State Physical Culture was created in 2000. Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Igor Yurievich Sazonov was appointed director.
Over its 15-year history, the branch has graduated more than 1,300 specialists in the specialties “Physical Culture and Sports” and “Adaptive Physical Culture”, which are valued both in Russia and abroad, since the quality of training meets international standards. Some of them occupy leadership positions, work in educational institutions various levels, sports clubs, kinesitherapy centers, rehabilitation centers, fitness industry. Taking into account the needs of the region, the Yekaterinburg Institute of Physical Culture (branch) of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Ural State University of Physical Culture" opened at its base a direction in the field of training for the tourism industry - "Tourism". The Institute is a permanent organizer of the annual project for the prevention of tobacco smoking among schoolchildren in the city of Yekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk region “Competition of smoking-free classes”, which is held under the patronage of the Government of the Sverdlovsk region and the Yekaterinburg Diocese.
The patriotic education of students does not go unnoticed. The institute has a well-developed system of self-government, and the institute of supervision operates successfully. The history of the Ural State University of Physical Culture dates back to 1970, when a branch of the Omsk University was opened in Chelyabinsk state institute physical culture. After 25 years it was transformed into the Ural state academy physical culture, and in 2005 the academy deservedly became a university.

Today, UralGUFK is not just the only sports university in the Urals, but an entire methodological center for sports and physical education work in the Ural federal district and surrounding regions. Every year, the university graduates about 2 thousand bachelors and master’s students in 40 sports, as well as specialists in health technologies. The material and technical base of UralGUFK includes 4 educational buildings and 2 dormitories. The sports infrastructure of the university is represented by an educational and sports complex (athletics arena), halls for sports games, wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, and a ski lodge. The educational process is provided with modern computer technology; more than 30 classrooms are equipped with multimedia kits. The library collection consists of about 160 thousand publications.

The main academic building of UralGUFK has one of the best student canteens in the city, as well as the pride of the university - the museum of the history of UralGUFK and Olympic glory, the total number of exhibits of which exceeds 8 thousand units. Its famous graduates and students, outstanding athletes of the past and present make their contribution to the development of the museum. The tradition of Olympic champions at the university continues from the times of famous speed skaters Tatyana Sidorova and Svetlana Bazhanova, two-time Olympic champions in hockey Sergei Makarov and Sergei Mylnikov, Olympic biathlon champion Svetlana Ishmuratova and Olympic silver medalists judoka Vitaly Makarov and volleyball player Ekaterina Gamova . The medal relay is being taken by current students and undergraduates of Ural State University of Physical Culture, champions and prize-winners of the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London 2012 and the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014.

Judoist Mansur Isaev last year became the Olympic champion in judo, and taekwondo player Anastasia Baryshnikova won a bronze medal in taekwondo. In 2011, the only interuniversity center for training sports volunteers in the region also began operating within the walls of Ural State University of Physical Culture.

Under the patronage of the university, the Center actively participates in the organization and conduct of the most significant sporting events both in Chelyabinsk and around the world. World and European championships in curling and judo, international taekwondo tournaments, stages of the World Water Polo League - all the central events of sports life in the Southern Urals were held with the help of UralGUFK volunteers. Since 2012, the volunteer movement has acquired new dimensions, moving far beyond the borders of the Southern Urals. Volunteer students from the Ural State University of Physical Culture went to work at the World Martial Arts Games in St. Petersburg, at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, at the World Summer Universiade in Kazan, and finally, at the Olympic Games in London and at the “home” Winter Olympics -2014 in Sochi.

The management of UralGUFK supports students' motivation to acquire knowledge by creating favorable conditions for study and leisure activities. Thus, a variety of creative teams, and for the most talented and active students, excellent students, there is a developed incentive system. These are vacations at the ski resorts of the Southern Urals, meetings of excellent students in Turkey, increased scholarships, as well as an annual presentation for scholarships from the governor of the Chelyabinsk region, the Chelyabinsk Administration and the Chelyabinsk City Duma. To date, a system of continuous education in the field of physical culture and sports has been built on the basis of the university. The level of secondary vocational education is represented by the Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg colleges of physical education. At the stage of higher professional education, bachelors, specialists and masters are trained at 4 faculties and more than 30 departments. The postgraduate level is associated with training at the Intersectoral Regional Center for Advanced Studies, higher school trainers, postgraduate and doctoral studies. Thus, UralGUFK provides the learning process from pre-university training to advanced training of certified specialists.
