Postcard– what could be more beautiful than a small card signed with your own hand? Unique design, monograms and magic words are able to give true pleasure to someone who appreciates real feelings.

Today you won’t surprise anyone with an electronic card, but the paper version will become the most memorable gift. Still don't know how to please your loved ones?

What should I write to you, my friend...What am I talking about? And I’m talking about what to write in a postcard, how to start and how to end, and should you generally adhere to any writing rules?

Dear Tom,

Next, you should indicate why you decided to write. If you are responding to a postcard you have already received, answer the questions, if there were any. Write own text, after which write the final phrase on a separate line

Best wishes,
(own name)

Or Love, + name

And below is the address to which the postcard should be delivered in the following order:
first and last name of the addressee;
house number, street name;
city, postal code;
a country.

History of the postcard

Delving deeper into history, we note that there are several versions of the appearance of the first postcard. It is known that the first of them was created by the English artist Dobson in 1795. A little later, Henry Cole asked his friend John Gersley to help depict something New Year's, as a result of which a New Year's card with a winter landscape was born. Postcards began to gain popularity and were sold with notepaper.

The boom in postcard printing was gaining momentum in Europe, and these small cards migrated to Russia in the second half of the 19th century. It was then that famous artists began to make magnificent drawings, which became real works of art and were protected like the apple of the eye ( cherish as the apple of one's eye). But the word “postcard” itself comes from “open letter”. It is also known that the first postcards were called “congratulations”. Here is an old word in the Russian language that will still find a place in speech today.

Quite a price for a small card

If you have been to a flea market at least once, you have probably seen not only all sorts of antique beads, cameras, stones, wooden toys, but also postcards. By the way, one such card, issued in England in 1843, was sold for 22,000 pounds sterling. There are only 10 such examples left, and who knows how much it might sell for in 50 years.

When postcards had already become fashionable, they began to make them themselves, using maximum imagination. Thus, dried plants, tree branches, fabrics, beads and even boric acid were used to depict snow. Today, few people make postcards, although it is quite an exciting business. Putting your soul into it small piece art, you give a piece of yourself and your love.

Postcrossing: exchanging postcards around the world

It’s no secret that with the advent of smartphones, you can create a postcard online in a second and immediately send it to the recipient, so don’t waste time making and sending a little joy to your friends and loved ones. Modernity is quite changeable: just yesterday we read everything e-books, and today we buy paper books again, because it is fashionable to read a real book, which, according to Ray Bradbury, is “bread for the hungry.”

The same thing happens with postcards. At the peak of popularity "postcrossing", which is an exchange of cards between residents different countries. And this is truly a unique event that each of you can join. Agree, it’s quite nice to receive news from Japan, Mexico or the sunny Dominican Republic. You can join this movement here

They will be pleased. The main thing is to be relevant and know what you are saying. Therefore, we invite you to look into compliments in English with translation.

When designing postcards in English, approach this issue creatively. Don’t be lazy, choose something that emphasizes best sides a person to whom pleasant words are addressed. Don't forget to subscribe at the end. Among the gray everyday life and fast rhythm, we do not notice the joy of life. Give smiles, cards, compliments and congratulations.

Scientific and technological progress has so rapidly covered all areas modern world that many people have difficulty remembering when last time sent letters or congratulatory telegrams. But you must admit, electronic holiday cards and regular mailings are not comparable to standard postcards.

The birthday of family or friends is a great occasion to give a special gift that will stand out from the rest and always give warm memories. It could be a handmade postcard. Before you start making it, think about what the birthday boy’s hobbies are and what colors he prefers. Filling is important - after all, each of us appreciates sincere wishes into which a person puts his soul. Among the interesting ideas are the design of foreign language. You will have to spend more time, but it's worth it, believe me!

How to write a postcard in English?

As the researchers note, a card signed in English speaks of romance and special treatment. But where to start and what words to use to make the text complete and harmonious?

Dear (“dear”) and indicate the name of the recipient - the first line of your congratulatory text will begin with this polite address. This is how the British and Americans express deep respect. Only in the first case is a comma placed after the address, and in the second - a colon.

Then make the wish itself. If you are a “newbie” in learning English, then it will be most convenient for you to first prepare the text in Russian, and then use a dictionary to translate it. This option is also great if you want to write something creative. For the “experienced”, we suggest thinking about formatting the content with poems of your own composition. This card will definitely not leave anyone indifferent!

According to established tradition, the final phrase of a letter is considered to be Best wishes (“with Best wishes") + your name. Among the unofficial options - With love (“with love”) and indicate the name of the sender.

We present to your attention a sample postcard in English. The text presented below can be called universal - it is suitable for congratulating both a loved one and a work colleague.

Dear Dmitriy!

Happy 25th Birthday to you!

Let this date become a step into the world of new discoveries. I wish you good health, no

I wish you all the optimism and achievement of your goals!

Best wishes, Anna

Happy congratulate you to your 25th birthday. I wish this date be a step into the world of new discoveries. I want to wish you all the best: health, inexhaustible optimism and achieving the goals!

Speaking about postcards, it should be noted that a letter can be prepared using a similar technique. Its content has no boundaries, you can tell a friend about your successes at work, an unforgettable vacation - it all depends on the sender’s imagination.

Dear Lily!

Many years have passed since we last saw each other. A lot has changed since you moved. I have so much to tell you. Next week I will be in your city and will definitely visit you. Looking forward to our meeting!

With love, Elena

It had been a long time since we met the last time. Much has changed since you moved. Next week I’ll be in your town next week, so I will definitely visit you. a visit. Looking forward to our meeting!

With love, Elena

The final touch is the address to which the postcard should be sent. It is listed in a specific order. First we write the recipient's first and last name - the British do not indicate patronymics, so we will follow the rules.

The design of the address bar is also different from the form we are used to:

  • house (we don’t put a comma after);
  • street (attributing Avenue, Road, Street);
  • city;
  • postal code (if you don’t know, use the electronic directory on Internet resources);
  • a country.

Sometimes, for the convenience of the postal service, after the house number the direction is written in the form of one capital letter: “N” – north, “S” – south, “W” – west or “E” – east. When merging directions - “NW”.

Example address bar:

  • Ann Smith
  • 26 S Dorset Avenue
  • San Francisco
  • 98326

Ready! Now all that's left to do is seal, send and wait for a response.

We looked at the technical side of creating a card in English, but do you know the history of its appearance? Researchers identify several versions. The most common one refers to the English artist Dobson, who created the postcard in 1795. In Europe, this “invention” began to be in great demand on the eve of Christmas after depicting a winter landscape. But cards came to Russia only in the second half of the 19th century. The semantic meaning of the word comes from “open letter”.

Today, making a postcard with your own hands is one of the methods of learning English with children. This approach has a number of advantages:

  • application of theory in practice;
  • vocabulary replenishment;
  • a playful and creative form allows you to focus the child’s attention;

The lesson becomes interesting and in the future the child attends classes with pleasure.

We hope that our tips will help you write a postcard in English that will not leave the recipient indifferent.
